The film “Showing Up” directed by Kelly Reichardt was chosen to receive the Robert Altman Award, which is given to a film director, casting director and cast member. Due to the rules of the Spirit Awards, the film cannot be eligible in the acting categories.

Thus, among the snobs, the biggest misses were Paul Giamatti for “The Holdovers”, and Cailee Spaeny for “Priscilla”. Both were remembered in Gotham, and now they were left out of Indie.

In fact, “Priscilla” had no nominations here, nor did the film “Origin”, by acclaimed filmmaker Ava DuVernay.

Founded in 1984, Spirit is an award dedicated to independent filmmakers. The Independent Spirit Awards are presented by Film Independent, a non-profit organization dedicated to independent films and independent filmmakers.
