The news was revealed during her appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”. “I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for Idol. I mean I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat, you what I’m saying Jimmy?”, said Katy.

The host then asked what her fellow Idol judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie said about her leaving, and Katy responded: “Well they’ll find out tonight!”. She explained that they “know that I have some things planned for this year,” adding, “So it’s going to be a very, very exciting year … for all popstar girlies!”.

Perry joined as a Idol judge alongside Bryan and Richie in 2018, for ABC’s revival of the show after its original 15-season run on Fox. In July 2023, ABC announced their return as judges for the 22nd season, the first episode of which will air on February 18.
