On June 1, Netflix handed down the news that the sci-fi drama Sense8 would be cancelled, not long after the second season was released.
But Netflix heard our cries and is throwing us a bone!
On Thursday, the streaming giant confirmed that the series will return for a two-hour finale special expected to air in 2018.
Co-creator Lana Wachowski made the announcement through a letter about her own reaction to the show’s surprise axing. She says that the decision is a direct result of fans’ petitions and letters.
“It is my great pleasure as well as Netflix’s (believe me, they love the show as much as we do but the numbers have always been challenging) to announced that there will be another two-hour special released next year, Wachowski wrote in the announcement. “Improbably unforeseeably, your love has brought Sense8 back to life,” she added.
Sense8, about a “cluster” of eight “sensates” mentally and emotionally linked who become targets of a mysterious corporation, had developed a passionate fan base thanks to its divers cast, LGBTQ-positive themes, and exploration of issues involving politics, gender, and religion.
And although it seems like there’s no turning back on the cancellation decision, Sense8 fans will have a much need closure with an ending they totally deserve.
