Ready Player One, the long-awaited film adaptation of Ernest Cline’s hit eponymous novel, will hit theaters next year. And although we are still eight months away from its premiere, we finally have an idea of what director Steven Spielberg is going for, thanks to the first official photo of the upcoming film.
The picture, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, shows Tye Sheridan (a.k.a. Wade Watts) in his hideout, the only place where he gets to be alone, where the orphaned boy stores his most treasured belongings— old comics, newspaper clippings, and other memorabilia from the 80’s.
Ready Player One follows the story of our hero, Wade Watts, who escapes from his miserable surroundings by log in into the OASIS, a virtual reality wonderland saturated in a love of all-things-80’s, where users can lead idyllic alternative lives, created by James Halliday, played by Mark Rylance.
After Halliday dies, he offers up his vast fortune as the prize in an elaborated Easter egg contest. Along with gamers from all around the world, Wade joins the adventure and quickly finds himself pitted against powerful corporate foes and other ruthless competitors who will do anything, in OASIS and the real world, to win the pop culture treasure hunt.
Along with Sheridan and Rylance, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, T.J. Miller, and Ben Mendelsohn will star in the movie.
