With grate fame comes great responsibility!
Actor George Clooney and his human rights lawyer wife, Amal Clooney, donated $1 million USD to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a group that combats hate groups in America. The donation was made through the Clooney Foundation for Justice.
The move comes days after Donald Trump’s controversial comments on the rally held by neo-Nazis and other white supremacist in Charlottesville, Virginia, which left a woman dead and 19 injured.
“I think there is blame on both sides,” Trump said in a press conference.
Referring the President’s comments, the Clooney released a joint statement explaining why they felt compelled to make the financial contribution.
“Amal and I wanted to add our voices (and financial assistance) to the ongoing fight for equality. There are no two sides to bigotry and hate. What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate.”
The non-profit organization said the donation would increase SPLC’s capacity to combat hate group.
“Like George and Amal Clooney, we were shocked by the size, ugliness, and ferocity of the white supremacist gathering in Charlottesville.” Said SPLC president Richard Cohen. “We are deeply grateful to the Clooney Foundation for standing with us as this critical moment in our country’s fight against hate.”
The Clooney Foundation for Justice— co-founded by the power couple— was established in 2016, and aims to help advance justice in courtrooms, classrooms, and communities around the world.
George and Amal Clooney, who recently welcomed twins, serve as the foundation’s presidents.
