It’s been 13 years since Just Timberlake was “banned” from the NFL’s Super Bowl after Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction. But it seems like things are about to change for the former boybander.
According to an unnamed insider cited by US Magazine, pop superstar Justin Timberlake is reportedly “finalizing” a deal to put him on the stage at the NFL championship in Minneapolis on February 4.
Jay-Z was rumored to be his co-star, although it’s been said the rapper has turned down the NFL’s offer, given the league’s current controversy over players refusing to stand during the playing of the national anthem.
“As for right now, it will just be Justin—no surprise performers;” the insider said.
And to be honest, it’s not like Justin Timberlake needs an element of surprise. Not only because of his undeniable talent as an entertainer—one of the bests of our generation—, but specially because of his R-rated, troubled past with the NFL.
In 2004, during the Patriots vs. Panthers halftime show, Justin Timberlake—some say accidentally, but we all agree very, very controversially—ripped off part of Janet Jackson’s bustier, revealing her pierced nipple during the live broadcast rendition of his son Rock your Body.
The scandalous scene is known as the “NippleGate”.
Ever since, the Federal Communications Commission changed the way halftime shows operate, implementing new policies like a 5-seconds broadcast delay during live performances.
But it’s been 13 years, and Justin has proven himself one of the most well-liked performers today. And with a possible new album set to be released at the beginning of next year, the Super Bowl timing would be absolutely optimal!
Maybe he’ll be able to break the record set by Lady Gaga this past year for the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show of all time. We’ll see!
Forget about the football teams. I’m rooting for you, JT!
