It’s been 11 years since the last episode of Malcolm in the Middle aired, and to this day, the FOX series is still considered one of the best sitcoms in the history of TV. However, one of his cast members doesn’t even recall being a part of it.
During Monday’s episode of Dancing With the Stars, actor Frankie Muniz opened up about his health battle and revealed that he doesn’t remember the 6 years he spent filming the show.
“Most people think that my most memorable year would be the year ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ started, because it allowed me to live all these dreams of min,” Muniz said. “I’ve gotten to really do anything I’ve wanted to do, but the truth is, I don’t really remember much of that… it almost feels like it wasn’t me.”
Since age 7, Muniz has suffered an estimated of nine concussions. That, along with a series of mini-strokes—or transient ischemic attacks—which cut off blood supply to the brain, have resulted in the severe memory loss surrounding Frankie’s childhood acting days.
“It makes me a little sad,” Muniz admitted. “Things pop back into my mind I should have remembered. I should have remembered going to Australia. That’s something people remember!”
His performance in Malcolm in the Middle from 2000 to 2006, gained Frankie a handful of award nominations as well as a lifelong friendship with Bryan Cranston, his former TV dad.
“Frankie was a TV star, then he became a race car driver, and then a drummer in a rock band,” Cranston said on Dancing With The Stars. “I said to him, ‘What are you going to be next, an astronaut next? You´re doing all these things professionally that everybody dreams about.’”
He continued: “They are still his experiences, my job is to tell him to remember what happened on Malcolm in the Middle. What a life.”
Despite the severe consequences of his health issues, Frankie says he doesn’t see it as a negative, and that has learned to live with his condition, mainly relying on his girlfriend Paige to preserve his memory by writing what they do together in a journal.
Frankie and his partner Witney Carson are currently competing in the 25th season of Dancing With the Stars. “It’s been a combination of everything I’ve done which has led me to be in the position I am today, where I can help other follow their dreams.”
