Miranda Hobbes is getting into plitics!
On Monday, via Twitter, The Sex and the City star announced her intention to run for governor of her “home”, the state of New York.
“I’ve never lived anywhere else,” Cynthia says in the video announcing her candidacy. “When I grew up here, it was just my mom and me in a one-bedroom, fifth floor walk-up. New York is where I was raised and where I’m raising my kids […] I was given chances I just don’t see for most of New York’s kids today […] I love New York. I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else, but something has to change.”
The 51-year-old actress concludes by confidently proclaiming, “I’m Cynthia Nixon, I’m a New Yorker, and together we can win this fight.”
Nixon will challenge Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo in the state’s Democratic primary in September.
Although there’ve been many celebrities teasing with the idea of making the jump from the entertainment world to the politics universe, Cynthia Nixon is one of the few who has actually pulled the trigger.
Dwayne Johnson has spoken many times about his intention to run for office in 2020, although he has yet to make an official announcement. The calls for Oprah Winfrey to run for president reached a fever pitch among her co-workers and fans on social media following her powerful speech she delivered at this year’s Golden Globes. Nevertheless, it was Winfrey herself who ruled out the idea saying she “[doesn’t] have the DNA for it.”
Unlike Oprah, perhaps Maybe Cynthia Nixon actually does have what it takes to become governor of New York. After all, with a Tony, Grammy and Emmy under her belt, the actress turned politician is used to winning. Could she add governor to the list?
