A musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is set to open on Broadway in 2020, as announced by the late King of Pop’s estate announced on Tuesday.
The yet-untitled production features an unusually acclaimed creative team. The story will be written by Lynn Nottage, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner for Ruined and Sweat, and it will feature songs from Jackson’s extensive catalogue of hits. The show will be directed and choreographed by the Tony Award winner behind An American in Paris and artistic associate of the Royal Ballet in London, Christopher Wheeldon.
It’s unclear what parts of Jackson’s life will be left out. Whether the more controversial talking points—such as his 2005 trial and acquittal over claims of sexual abuse—will be featured or not in the musical, is still unknown.
This isn’t the first time Michael Jackson has been the subject of staged or live events. There’s the Thriller Live concert, that has been running for nearly a decade in London, Cirque du Soleil’s Vegas show Michael Jackson ONE, and documentaries including Michael Jackson’s This Is It, and Michael Jacksons’ Journey From Motown to Off the Wall.
As for the casting, is still too early to reveal any names. Hopefully they will make the wise choice to cast human actors to play Jackson, rather than bring out the hologram from storage!
