The Rock has revealed the coolest possible co-star for his Fast and Furious spinoff. Idris Elba is joining the cast of Hobbs and Shaw as the villain of the upcoming movie. Dwayne Johnson took to Instagram to welcome the actor with “tattooed and open arms.”
“For years we’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to work together and this film is the perfect one,” Johnson wrote. “Every great hero needs an even greater villain.”
As the title of the film implies, it will star Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in the Fast and Furious iconic roles, Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, who began as rival but later teamed up in the eighth installment of franchise.
Little is known about what Idris Elba’s role will entail, but the script is currently being worked on by Chris Morgan, who’s written every Fast entry since Tokyo Drift, with Deadpool 2’s director David Leitch behind the camera.
While he’s known for playing more heroic characters like those in last year’s Thor: Ragnorok, The Dark Tower, and Pacific Rim, Elba has had some villainous turns too. He recently played the antagonist in Star Trek Beyond and voiced Shere Khan in the live-action The Jungle Book. He’s also been rumored to be under consideration to play the iconic character James Bond.
Hobbs and Shaw will race into theaters on August 2, 2019. And while the spinoff does mean a delay for Fast 9, we can still expect the wanton destruction of public property and many chumps receiving roundhouse kick to the face!
