Is he a real Legend or is he a real Legend?
If there’s anything that comes close to the thrill of reaching the Triple Crown of Acting, that would be achieving an EGOT. And as of Thursday, John Legend is one step closer to completing the showbusiness’ grand slam.
The singer scored his first Emmy nomination for his title role of NBC’s Easter Sunday Special, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert. Legend is competing against Antonio Banderas (Genius: Picasso), Darren Criss (The Assassination of Gianni Versace), Benedict Cumberbatch (Patrick Melrose), Jeff Daniels (The Looming Tower), and Jesse Plemons (Black Mirror) in the category of Lead Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie.
If John Legend wins, he will join an elite club of performers who have all won the entertainment industry’s four major awards—the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. The feat is so rare that only 12 people in history have completed it. Whoopi Goldberg, Rita Moreno, and Mel Brooks are among those who have accomplished this.
Aside from Legend, four other people could also complete their EGOT at this year’s Emmy Awards. Those four include Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the composer and lyricist of the original Jesus Christ Superstar musical and who are also credited as executive producers of the NBC special. The other two potential EGOT winners are Ben Pasek and Justin Paul, who wrote the original musical version of A Christmas Story.
And while 5 people could potentially complete this rare deed, none of them is happier than John Legend’s wife, Chrissy Teigen—even if her husband’s win means her Spike TV prize will have to be removed from the award shelf space!
