Before-and-after posts are nothing new in the age of Instagram. But a social media post celebrating weight gain is definitely something unexpected—especially for a Hollywood celebrity. Then again, the ever-candid Lena Dunham is nothing like your typical star.
On Tuesday, the Girls creator and actress shared a side-by-side collage with two photos: one of herself at 138 in April 2017 and a more recent one, now that she’s 24-pounds heavier but much more happy and healthier.
“On the left: 138 pounds, complimented all day and propositioned by men and on the cover of a tabloid about diets that work,” she said, admitting, “Also, sick in the tissue and in the head and subsisting only on small amounts of sugar, tons of caffeine and a purse pharmacy.”
Dunham continued to describe the second picture saying: “On the right: 162 pounds, happy joyous & free, complimented only by people that matter for reasons that matter, subsisting on a steady flow of fun/healthy snacks and apps and entrees, strong from lifting dogs and spirits.”
Shortly after debuting a slimmer look last year, the self-described “OG body positivity warrior” publicly addressed the negative reactions on social media to her dramatic weight loss.
“Suddenly, I had all these people being like, ‘You’re a hypocrite, I thought you were body positive. I thought you were a person who embraced bodies of all sizes,’ and I’m like ‘I do, I just also understand that bodies change, we live a long time, things happen,” Dunham told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show.
Lena Dunham’s body, however, wasn’t the only thing that changed over the last year. On January, she and longtime boyfriend Jack Antonoff announced their breakup after five and a half years together, though they’ve remained close friends.
