They say a man’s garbage is another’s treasure—and the same applies to television networks. Another busted pilot has found a new home: Streaming giant Netflix is saving the rejected Fox pilot Mixtape, giving the series a 10-episode order.
Mixtape is a musical romantic drama that connects love stories from a diverse group of people in contemporary Los Angele through their love of music. The series comes from the mind of Quantico creator Joshua Safran, and stars Step Up’s Jenna Dewan as Joanna.
Most of the original cast be there from the 2018 movie—La la land’s Callie Hernandez, Revenge’s Madeleine Stowe, and House of Card’s Campbell Scott. Raul Castillo, who played male lead Sam in the pilot, will be recast, as he recently booked a recurring role on Netflix’s show One Day At A Time.
This isn’t the first time that Netflix has picked through Fox’s reject pile this summer. Las month, the streaming services saved Lucifer, the Tom Ellis-starring cult series based on a Vertigo comic. Not only that, but Netflix could be pressing the rewind button on One’s Designated Survivor with Keifer Sutherland after ABC cancelled it.
For Dewan, who has had a difficult year following her split from Channing Tatum after nine years of marriage, Mixtape will be her first leading role in a series since starring in Witches of East End.
