Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer is set to star in a new Netflix production about black haircare pioneer and mogul, and one of America’s wealthiest women, Madam C.J. Walker.
Based on the book On Her Own Ground by A’Lelia Bundles—the iconic black beauty entrepreneur’s great-great-granddaughter—, the streaming giant’s limited series will tell the story of the outsized life of Sarah Breedlove, who was known professionally as Walker.
The eight-episode drama will be executive produced by Octavia Spencer, with Basketball star LeBron James also serving as one of the series’ producers—which, if you ask us, is pretty much a guarantee of excellence.
Walker became one of America’s first self-made female millionaires by creating and marketing hair products for African-Americans at the turn of the 20th century. The show promises a “highly irreverent” account of Walker’s success, overcoming “epic rivalries, tumultuous marriages and some trifling family” that marked her life.
Earlier this year Octavia Spencer was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Guillermo del Toro’s Shape of Water. Her credits also include 2016’ Hidden Figures and 2012 The Help, for which Octavia won her first Academy Award.
A release date for Madam C.J. Walker was not announced.
