While Justin Bieber, Hailey Baldwin, Nick Jonas, and Priyanka were busy becoming engaged, Michelle Williams was getting married to singer and songwriter Phil Elverum in a secret ceremony, as she revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair.
The Greatest Showman actress, 37, who has a daughter named Matilda with the late actor Heath Ledger, said they tied the knot in the Adirondacks, a mountain resort near New York, witnessed by only a few friends and their children.
“I never gave up on love. I always say to Matilda, ‘Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes’,” she told the magazine. “Obviously I’ve never once in my life talked about a relationship, but Phil isn’t anyone else. And that’s worth something.”
Williams continued: “Ultimately the way he loves me is the way I want to live my life on the whole. I work to be free inside of the moment. I parent to let Matilda feel free to be herself, and I am finally loved by someone who makes me feel free.”
Both Williams and her new husband, who performs under the name Mount Eerie, have lost partners in tragic circumstances. Ledger died of a drug overdose in 2008 when Matilda was two. Elverum lost his wife Genevieve Castree to pancreatic cancer in 2016 just four months after the birth of their daughter.
Although Michelle is famously private, she said that she wanted to share her story in the hopes that it could help or inspire other women. “What if this helps somebody? What if somebody who has always journeyed in this way, who has struggled as much as I struggled, and looked as much as I looked, finds something that helps them?”
