Anyone who lived in the early 2000’s remembers the infamous time when a certain pop diva answered “I don’t know her” when asked about her fellow pop star, initiating a notorious feud between both music icons. However, Mariah Carey’s shade against Jennifer Lopez was apparently just her trying to be nice.
In an interview with Pitchfork, the All I Want For Christmas hitmaker defended her words and claimed that she meant no harm to Jenny from the block. “I really was trying to say something nice or say nothing at all,” the superstar insisted. “I really was.”
Her iconic line became one of the most popular memes and gifs of all times. But Mariah tries to stay above it all. “You have to embrace it… I try to stay away from it [the social media conversations] because you can’t drown in that.”
Her comments made to Pitchfork are in stark contrast to her response to TMZ just two years ago, when Mariah said, “I still don’t know her!”. Or that same year on Watch Wat Happens Live, when, once again, she touched on the incident. “What am I supposed to say? I’m not gonna punt on a thing like ‘oh we’re all Hollywood, let’s all pretend we’re best friends because we’re in that land.”
Regardless, according to the diva herself, Mariah Carey’s shade against Jennifer Lopez was all just a misunderstanding—even if that makes her sound shadier!
