Natalie Portman apologized to Jessica Simpson after being accused by the singer of body shaming her in a recent interview.
While promoting her new film Vox Lux, the Oscar-winning actress sat down with USA Magazine reflected on the conflicting messages put out by the music industry and how they had a profound impact on her growing up.
“I remember being a teenaged, and there was Jessica Simpson on the cover of a magazine saying ‘I’m a virgin’ while wearing a bikini, and I was confused. Like, I don’t know what this is trying to tell me as a woman, as a girl.”
When Jessica Simpson learned about the actress’ comments, she took to Twitter and directed a post at Natalie Portman saying she was “disappointed” by her words.
“I was taught to be myself and honor the different ways all women express themselves, which is why I believed then—and I believe now—that being sexy in a bikini and being proud of my body are not synonymous with having sex.”
The post ends with what many viewed as a dig at Portman’s high-profile association with the #TimesUp movement. “I have made it my practice to not shame other women for their choices,” Simpson added. “In this era of Times Up and the great work you have done for women, I encourage you to do the same.”
Natalie Portman apologized to Jessica Simpson on her post, admitting she had “made a mistake.”
“I completely agree with you that a woman should be allowed to dress however she likes and behave however she likes and not be judged,” Portman wrote. “I only meant to say I was confused—as a girl coming of age in the public eye around the same time—by the media’s mixed messages about how girls and women were supposed to behave.”
Portman added that she “didn’t mean to shame [her].” “I’m sorry for any hurt my words may have caused,” she continued. “I have nothing but respect for your talent and your voice that you used to encourage and empower woman all over the globe.”
So Natalie Portman apologized to Jessica Simpson—and, man, those are two names we never expected to see together in a sentence. But when it comes to feuds, they can arise from anyone at any time!
