A former Scientologist has confirmed the longtime rumor that the church “absolutely” auditioned women to be Tom Cruise’s girlfriends.
Valerie Haney, who is a former member of Scientology’s inner elite Sea Org for 22 years before breaking from the church, detailed her escape in the latest episode of Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.
In a follow up-interview on TonyOrtega.org, Haney claimed that the wife of leader David Miscavige, Shelly, for whom she worked as a steward, was tasked with auditioning women to be Tom Cruise’s girlfriends.
“She though it was ridiculous,” Haney told the website. “She was just doing what Dave asked her to do. But it absolutely happened.”
The Church of Scientology issued a response to Haney’s comments, denying all accusations. “The Church of Scientology stated that Valerie Haney is outright lying and making up stories, as part of her employment for Leah Remini.”
It’s been long speculated that the Church of Scientology has systematically played a hand in high-profile member Tom Cruise’s past relationships.
Rumors have circulated for years that the Mission Impossible star’s marriage to Katie Holmes was a product of this alleged auditioning. In the 2015 documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, former members claimed they were asked to help “facilitate” the breakup between Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who is not a Scientologist.
