Gillette’s ad about toxic masculinity is sparking some sharp opinions.
The popular blade razor company recently released a new commercial that is stirring up some controversy across social media platforms. Gillette’s newest ad plays on their decades-old slogan “the best a mand can get” and replaces it with “the best men can be.”
The nearly 2-minute clip shares a deep, emotional message about what it means to be a man, masculinity, and rejecting the “boys will be boys” mentality. Gillette’s ad features images of bullying, mansplaining, and catcalling, and emphasizes who the cycle of violence continues when men don’t step in and stop other men from perpetuating said cycle.
According to its website, as part of the campaign, Gillette will be donating $1 million per year, for the next three years, to nonprofit programs “designed to inspire, educate, and help men of all ages achieve their personal ‘best’ and become role models for the next generations.”
Celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, Rainn Wilson, and Jessica Chastain have tweeted their support of the brand’s messages. However, along with this praise, there’s also been an inevitable backlash from fragile men who feel attacked by the ad—starting, unsurprisingly, with Piers Morgan.
