Spike Lee was the first of many to express their displeasure with the final result of the 2018 Academy Awards. Green Book won Best Picture and its controversial victory is proof of Hollywood’s unwillingness to change.
The film tells the story of an unlikely friendship that blossoms between pianist Dr. Don Shirley and his driver Tony ‘Lip’ Vallelonga as they make their way together across the American south. However, despite its good intentions, Green Book not only won the highest prize of the night, but also the first slot on a list of the worst Best Picture winners because of its ‘white savior’ rhetoric.
