After nearly a decade of dating, Miley Cyrus married Liam Hemsworth in a surprise wedding in December. However, though she is in a heterosexual relationship, the singer isn’t ditching her queer identity.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the Wrecking Ball hitmaker revealed that one of the reasons why she wedded her longtime boyfriend was in fact to show that queer people can enjoy straight romances and can fall in love with anyone.
“We’re redefining […] what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship,” Mrs. Hemsworth said. “A big part of my pride and my identity is being a queer person. What I preach is: People fall in love with people not gender, not looks, not whatever.”
Instead she claims their love is spiritual and shouldn’t be seen through the prism of sexuality. “What I’m in love with exists on almost a spiritual level,” she adds. “It has nothing to do with sexuality.”
In the Vanity Fair cover story, the 26-year-old went on to stress she is “proud” of her LGBTQ+ status and has not turned into a “polite hetero lady” because she “wore a dress on my wedding day”.
So yes, Miley Cyrus married Liam Hemsworth. But this queer lady really can’t be tamed—not even by a wedding band!
