The life span of a professional athlete can be a short one. Injuries, bad performances, or simply getting too old can all end the glory days.
The very smart sports stars will invest wisely. Many will go into business, media punditry, and for some, they will go on to be actors. And not little bit parts. But serious, mega box office winners.
As re-branding goes it can be incredibly lucrative but to really be at the top of your game, in not one, but two different careers takes serious skill. Some athletes will make the odd TV appearance, often as themselves. Others will hit the Reality TV circuit (Dancing With the Stars anyone???) in bid to stay current and relevant.
But those with real talent, well they become bona fide movie stars!
Who doesn’t love The Rock? Seriously, everybody loves him. Especially movie studios. Dwayne Johnson’s movies (there are 30 of them) have grossed a lifetime total of more than $3 BILLION. Yes, that’s Billion.
The former Wrestler has been acting for over 17 years and even his first movie, The Scorpion King brought in over $91m. But that wasn’t a patch on the $404m from Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle in 2017.
And the superstar’s appeal doesn’t show any signs of stopping. He stars in Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw as well as the Jumanji sequel, both of which will be released this year. That should please all of his 143M Instagram fans!
Co-star to Dwayne Johnson in Hobbs & Shaw, Statham started out as a professional diver. He was part of the British National Diving Team and went to the World Championships in 1992 where he finished in 12th place.
Six years later he was cast in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which turned into his breakout role and gateway to Hollywood.
He has gone on to star in huge hits such as The Transporter, Fast & Furious, The Expendables and Spy. In total, his movies have raked in over $1.6B at the box office.
As a footballer (soccer), Jones played for Chelsea, QPR, Wimbledon and Leeds Utd, in the UK. Known as a very tough opponent, Jones wasn’t beyond the odd dirty tackle on the pitch.
His well-earned reputation caught the attention of Guy Ritchie, who cast him, along with Jason Statham in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Playing the hard man suits Jones who has made a career out of being a bit of a psycho – on and off the pitch!
Over the last few years he has concentrated more on TV and can be seen in reoccurring roles in hit shows such as Galavant, Deception and Arrow.
One of the funniest guys on TV, Terry Crews is well know for playing Sergeant Terry Jeffords on Brooklyn Nine Nine. With 130 episodes in the bag to date, it is quite the transition from the NFL to comedy.
During the six years he has been starring in Brooklyn Nine Nine he has also voiced characters in Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 and American Dad. He also had his own reality show and been the host of Ultimate Beastmaster and America’s Got Talent in 2019.
He’s a really fun guy with a huge fanbase – just ask his 1.32M Twitter fans!
This multi faceted Austrian has had more career changes than Lady Gaga dresses on the red carpet! The former Professional Bodybuilder took the box office by storm in 1982 with Conan The Barbarian.
That laid the path for blockbusters such as the Terminator movies, Commando, Predator and Total Recall. He did occasionally step into more comedic roles in movies like Twins and Kindergarten Cop.
To everybody’s surprise he then married into the prestigious Kennedy family, marrying Maria Shriver in 1986. They have four children together, including Katherine who is now engaged to Chris Pratt. That led to Arnold’s own political success as the Governor of California. With his term served in 2011, he returned to acting.
