All hail to the new King of Rock and Roll! Austin Butler will play Elvis Presley alongside Tom Hanks, who was previously cast as Elvis’ legendary manager, Col Tom Parker.
The forthcoming biopic from the Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann will follow the singer’s rise to fame, particularly focusing on his relationship with the controlling Parker. The 20-year journey to stardom will be set “against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and the loss of innocence in America.”
Speaking to Deadline, Luhrmann explained his decision in choosing 27-year-old Butler: “Through a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s musical figures.”
Austin Butler will play Elvis after beating the names of Ansel Elgort, Harry Styles and Miles Teller, whom reportedly tested for the role.
Aside from being known as Vanessa Hudgens’ longtime boyfriend, Austin Butler isn’t a big name in the entertainment industry. Some fans, however, will recognize him from his TV roles on “Arrow” and “The Carrie Diaries.” He will also appear in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
The biopic doesn’t have a name or release date yet, however, it will start shooting in Australia early next year.
