Once again Alicia Vikander will be venturing forth on a white knuckle mission, the details of
which are yet to be revealed. It’s not yet known if any of the rest of the cast of the first movie will be making another appearance but what is certain is that new movie’s going to be directed by Ben Wheatley with a screenplay written by his wife, Amy Jump.
The first movie was reputed to have cost around $100 million to make and took $275 million at the box office so, with figures like that, a sequel was always on the cards. An added financial incentive for the studios involved is the money they also stand to make out of the merchandising for the film. After all, there’s already a proven track record on this score with a huge range of products linked to the franchise already in circulation, which have been very popular indeed.
For example, as a film that originated as a video game, it’s only logical that things came full circle with the release of the Shadow of the Tomb Raider game back in 2018, to coincide with the rebooting of the franchise 15 years after the last outing of Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft.
A more surprising video game manifestation of our heroine will be familiar to those who are used to playing in an online casino. That’s because there’s a very popular slots game called Lara Croft Temples and Tombs, that’s the third in a series created by the leading online slots designers Microgaming. Featuring symbols including Lara herself along with scarab beetles, treasure chests, and her iconic explorer’s water bottle, playing the game is made even more interesting by the addition of her running commentary.
For those who like their film-related fun to be a little less high-stake, you can also enjoy some underground adventures with Tomb Raider Legends: The Board Game. It’s a game for three-or-four players – you need that many because each one is going to be playing a different version of Lara. These are titled Underworld, Angel of Darkness, Classic, and Legend Lara, and the objective is to search for the prized artifact and return it home before any of your opponents do. Taking under an hour to play, it’s fast-moving with no time to get ‘board’ by the action.
One of the more unusual ways that the franchise has been merchandised is by giving die-hard fans to chance to experience at first hand some of the more challenging experiences of being a tomb raider. At the San Diego Comic Com in 2018 visitors had the chance to enjoy, or endure, the Tomb Raider Experience. This involved letting snakes entwine themselves around fans and having the chance to eat a selection of bugs, including scorpions and worms.
For those of us who’d like to keep a safe distance from that kind of thing and show our appreciation of the film in a less gross way, then there’s a whole host of other Tomb Raider merch waiting for us from action watches to Mayan-style mugs. Some of these tie in with the movies while others are linked to the Shadow of the Tomb Raider video game, and just a quick search online is certain to reveal plenty of choices suitable for every Lara Croft fan.
If, on the other hand, you’ve enough room in your home for it then a full Tomb Raider arcade game could be just the thing. It’s a shooting game for up to four people and features a 120” screen. There is a full 20 minutes of gameplay as you work your way through increasingly challenging waves of enemies in true Lara Croft style.
If you’re one of the fans who can’t wait for the new movie’s projected release date of March 2021, any of these may help to pass the time. And you can also be sure that a whole new bunch of stuff will be on its way to tie in with the sequel when it does eventually arrive.
