BET Awards issues note after Lil Nas X’s criticism

On Tuesday (7), Lil Nas X tweeted a snippet of a song in which he sings “f*c k BET” and brags about how he doesn’t need anyone to validate his success. Previously, the singer had been dissatisfied with not being nominated for the 2022 BET Awards.

The song titled “Late to Da Party” is a collaboration with YB, Lil Nas clarified that it’s not just about BET. “This not over no bet award this is about the bigger problem of homophobia in the black community, y’all can sit and intend all u want but imma risk it all for us,” he wrote.

Last week Lil Nas X tweeted at the awards but then deleted it, “I just feel like Black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top mfs try to intend we are invisible”, wrote the author of “Industry Baby”. 

In response, the BET Awards issued a statement explaining why the singer as not nominated this year. “We love Lil Nas X. He was nominated for a best new artist BET Award in 2020 and we proudly showcased his extraordinary talent and creativity on the show twice. Unfortunately, this year, he was not nominated by BET’s Voting Academy, which is comprised of an esteemed group of nearly 500 entertainment professionals in the fields of music, television, film, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations, influencers and creative arts”, says the BET note released by Variety.

The note continues, explaining that no one from BET acts as a member of the aforementioned Voting Academy. “At BET, we are passionate advocates for the wonderful diversity that exists within our community,” the statement continues. “We are committed to using all of our platforms to provide visibility and inclusion for all of the many intersections of the Black community”.

The BET Awards recognize African-American artists in music, sport, acting and other entertainment. Lil Nas X was nominated for Best New Artist in 2020, but Roddy Rich won the award.
