US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Tuesday (12), that he is directing a committee to open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The reason would be the Democrat’s family business.

“I am directing our House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden,” McCarthy told reporters. Republicans, who now narrowly control the House, accuse Biden of profiting while he served as vice president from 2009 to 2017 from his son Hunter Biden’s foreign business ventures, although they have not provided evidence.

The announcement comes as the leader of the Republican party in the House faces growing pressure from his most radical supporters for him to take action against Biden.

The Republican leader is at a political crossroads trying to keep his most conservative lawmakers happy and avoid his own impeachment. The push for impeachment comes about weeks after the latest criminal accusation against Donald Trump.

“This is a transparent effort to boost Donald Trump’s campaign by establishing a false moral equivalence between Trump, the four-time indicted former president and Joe Biden,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.
