The president of the US, Joe Biden, stated, this Wednesday (25), that Israel has the right to defend its citizens but, at the same time, protect Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, who are victims of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

“Israel has to do everything in its power, no matter how difficult, to protect innocent civilians,” Biden said during a White House interview alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Furthermore, Biden also said that the region must prepare for the end of the Israel-Hamas conflict and “what comes next.” He reiterated the US position on a “two-state solution” for Israelis and Palestinians.

The president also expressed concern about the attack by “extremist settlers” on Palestinians in the West Bank, accusing them of adding fuel to the fire.

“They are attacking Palestinians in places they have a right to be,” he said.

Still in an interview, Biden stated that he did not trust the number of victims reported by Hamas in the explosion of a hospital in Gaza on October 17.

The Health Ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza said 471 people died in the explosion at Al-Ahli al-Arabi Hospital that night, but U.S. intelligence puts the number at between 100 and 300, Biden said.
