Barcelona confirmed Gavi’s serious injury. In a statement this Monday (20), the Catalan club reported that the 19-year-old Spanish midfielder completely ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, also suffered an associated injury to the lateral meniscus and will need to undergo surgery.
The player got injured during Spain’s 3-1 victory over Georgia in the final round of qualifying for the European Championship on Sunday. According to the Spanish press, Gavi’s recovery time should be six to eight months. As a result, he should no longer play in the 2023/24 season.
He is also at risk of being left out of the European Championship and not being able to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Gavi felt the injury to his right knee in the 22nd minute of the first half, in a move in which he was alone.
He had a problem trying to control the ball and soon asked for a substitution. The midfielder went directly to the dressing room, after being consulted by coach Luis de La Fuente and consoled by striker Joselu.
Therefore, according to Catalan press outlets such as “Mundo Deportivo” and “Sport”, Barcelona is outraged by Gavi’s injury. The club would be angry mainly because Spain had already qualified for the European Championship and would question why the midfielder had not been spared.
Under the FIFA Club Protection Program, Barcelona may be compensated with a minimum of 3 million euros if the player does not play for six months. After eight months, the bill rises to 4.3 million euros. The ceiling is 7.5 million per athlete and incident.
