Vuelta a Espanã begins in Portugal with individual time trials

Last Tuesday (19), during a presentation by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), at the Marriott Auditorium Hall in Madrid, Spain, the routes for the Vuelta a España 2024 were announced for the first time. The route will begin in Lisbon, Portugal, and will end in the local capital.

Starting on August 17th, the competition will have a more complex route list that will be made available to cyclists with two short individual time trials, nine climbs to the summit with stages around Pico Villuercas, in the mountains of Andalusia, Motril to Granada.

After the first phases, heading to northwestern regions of Spain, the athletes will face the mountains that are located in the country’s mountain range, with summits that have a high slope. The Lakes of Covadonga will return to the project with a 22 kilometer climb that has already led to dramatic scenes of cyclists throughout the competition.

Phases 19 and 20 will feature mountains with large climbs and descents such as Alto de Moncalvillo and Picón Blanco, in Burgos. After the stages, the following day, the athletes will have to go through fast, flat individual races of just 22 kilometers and time trials in Madrid. Seville, Córdoba, Granada, Cascais, and Porto de Ancares will also be destinations for competitors.
