What is VPN and how does it work?
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, and simply put, it helps to keep you safe and protected when you’re surfing the Internet. When you use a VPN, all the data sent to and from your computer or mobile device is encrypted. This means that no one, not even your ISP can see what sites you’re looking at, or what you’re doing online. If you value your privacy, then you really should be using a VPN.
A VPN has other uses too. If you’re wanting to access content that is restricted to a country that you don’t live in, for example a show on Netflix, or a video on YouTube, using a VPN can solve this problem as it sends you to that site via a server in the correct country. Clever stuff!
You don’t need to pay for a VPN
There are plenty of VPN services out there that charge a fee, and if you are happy to pay, then you’ll be able to find a service that is super fast, with unlimited data. However, if you want to use a free service, there are also several out there that will fit the bill.
Some examples of the best free VPN services out there…
HIDE,me – Hide.Me offers you just three servers, but there is no logging, so your Internet habits will not be accessible to anyone else.
HideMan – HideMan gives you four hours for free, there is also the option to upgrade. If you only use a VPN infrequently, this could be a good option for you. It gets good reviews for its mobile version.
Hotspot Shield – This service does show adverts and gather user data, but if that doesn’t bother you, then this a great option. It’s a good choice if all you’re after is accessing content from other countries.
