Gambling movies first appeared on a silver screen over a century ago. The films of this kind grew more popular after the Second World War when the rapid rise of the economy was recorded in the US, and a lot of folks started gambling.

Today, many people replaced land-based casino rooms with online casino sites. Nevertheless, the bright lights of Las Vegas remain relevant in popular culture and inspire many movie makers to create their films there.

But how realistic are gambling movies really and how do they affect the image of gambling in general?

If you’re a fan of James Bond movies, you should have noticed that he likes playing casino games such as baccarat or craps, which are heavily based on luck. However, 007 always looks like he uses skill to beat his opponents.

As far as the image goes, movies usually portray gambling in a negative context. Casino and The Godfather tell a story of organized crime behind gambling operations. Shade and Lucky Numbers show that in order to be a winner, you need to use cheating tactics.

Ocean’s Eleven, for example, is not so much about gambling as it is a story about people who are trying to pull off a huge casino heist.

Nevertheless, not all casino movies try to smear the image of the gambling industry. Many films like Mafia and Croupier feature stories that inspire with their miraculous winnings and happy endings. Rain Man and Rounders talk about the winners of skill games and the fact that anybody can become a successful gambler if they study the game enough.

It’s not a secret that gambling movies like promoting luxury and wealth. Most movies of this kind focus on gambling addiction as well. However, you should only look at gambling movies as fictional stories and not let them drawn you into or turn you away from gambling. Always be a responsible gambler and look at these movies simply as a form of entertainment.
