Obama’s former rival, Mitt Romney announces retirement and calls on Biden and Trump to give up re-election

Date:

Former Republican Party presidential candidate in 2012, US Senator Mitt Romney, who challenged then-President Barack Obama, announced this Wednesday that he will not seek re-election in 2024. Romney, known for having historically broken with his party at voting in favor of removing former President Donald Trump from office, explained that his intention is to make room for a “new generation of leaders”.

The former presidential candidate strongly suggested that both Trump, 77, and President Joe Biden, 80, follow his lead and drop out of running in order to allow younger candidates to take over. He argued that none of them were effectively leading their party to address the “critical challenges” the nation is facing.

“Coming to the end of another term, I would be entering my 80s. Honestly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders,” Romney, who is 76, said in a video statement. “They are the ones who need to make the decisions that will shape the world in which they live.”

The announcement by Romney, a former governor from privileged backgrounds and a traditional conservative who has for years been at odds with a Republican Party that has tilted sharply to the right and adopted a more aggressive form of partisanship, was in some ways not surprising.
