Trump appeals decision that excluded him from Maine primary elections

Date:

This Tuesday (3), former President Donald Trump filed an appeal in the Superior Court of Maine challenging the state decision that prohibited the inclusion of his name on ballots for the Republican Party primaries.

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows based her decision on Trump’s role in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Trump’s lawyers argue that Bellows is “biased” and did not have the legal authority to remove the name of the former president on state ballots.

Trump also plans to appeal to the Supreme Court against a similar decision by the Colorado court. On December 19, the Colorado Supreme Court excluded Trump from the state’s Republican primary, citing his role in the attack on the Capitol.

Both decisions are based on the interpretation of the Third Section of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, considering that Trump was involved in an attempted “insurrection”, which would disqualify him from public office. Tension between different states has increased in recent days, putting pressure on the Supreme Court to take a stance and rule at the federal level.
