In an interview to The Guardian, Dolly explained that when she was young her style inspiration came from the “town tramp”. “She was flamboyant. She had bright red lipstick, long red fingernails,” Parton said. “She had high-heeled shoes, little floating plastic goldfish in the heels of them, short skirts, low-cut tops, and I just thought she was beautiful.”

She added that people would describe the “town tramp” as “nothing but trash”, and she would say “Well, that’s what I’m gonna be when I grow up”. She proceeded to explain that her grandfather was not okay with this choice, and would punish her physically for that.

However, that didn’t stop her from sticking to her own fashion choices. “I was willing to pay for it. I’m very sensitive, I didn’t like being disciplined – it hurt my feelings so bad to be scolded or whipped or whatever. But sometimes there’s just that part of you that’s willing, if you want something bad enough, to go for it.”

Dolly will release a book on October 17, “Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones”, which will talk about her style and fashion choices over the years. She is also to release a new album on November 17, called “Rockstar”, which will include a feature with Miley Cyrus, Elton John and some other artists.
