After the billion-dollar success of Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount is in the early stages of developing another sequel to the 1980s classic, with Tom Cruise back as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The information comes from journalist Matt Belloni, from Puck.

Also according to the report, the sequel will also bring back Glen Powell and Miles Teller, who played the pilots Hangman and Rooster in Maverick.

The script is in development with Ehren Kruger, one of those responsible for the second film, and director Joseph Kosinski is also expected to return to his role.

Thus, resuming the story of the US Navy’s elite pilots, which began in the 1986 action classic, Top Gun: Maverick earned almost US$1.5 billion at the global box office – the second highest number of 2022, behind only Avatar: The Water Path.

It’s worth remembering that the news comes shortly after Tom Cruise signed a contract with Warner Bros. Discovery which, despite not being exclusive, effectively means that the star is leaving Paramount for its rival.

As a result, it was expected that Mission: Impossible 8, scheduled for 2025, would be a kind of farewell to Cruise at Paramount, with whom he has worked for decades and with whom he made his best-known films.

The news of a third Top Gun, however, suggests that there are at least two more collaborations with the studio in the works.
