Ahead of the Premier League match against Chelsea on Thursday (4), Ten Hag attributed the team’s injury problems to an accumulation of fatigue from his first 18 months in charge and from international soccer.

United have already had 53 senior players sidelined by injury or illness this season and Ten Hag believes they need more footballers with the robustness of captain Bruno Fernandes, who has played 98 of the 103 games of his reign.

“We don’t train too hard. We need to be fit. With the standards in this league, you need to be fit. Otherwise you can’t match the standards you are required in a game. We don’t train too hard”, said the manager.

The manager also said he feels that international football is part of the problem when players get hurt. “The players get overloaded and can’t bring the performances anymore. We are already over the point where we demand what we want from our top players”, said Ten Hag.
