Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was banned from participating in his party’s primaries in the second state in the country, as determined by Maine’s Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows, last Thursday (28).

The Colorado Supreme Court previously ruled that the businessman could not run, giving him until January 5 to appeal to the Supreme Court. Bellows based his decision on the argument that Trump played a significant role in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, during which a mob attempted to prevent Joe Biden’s inauguration.

According to Bellows, Trump incited an insurrection, thus violating the 14th Amendment of the American Constitution. She emphasized the seriousness of her conclusion, highlighting that democracy is sacred, and noted that while no secretary of state has deprived a presidential candidate of voting based on Section Three of the 14th Amendment, Trump is the first to be involved in an insurrection.

If the decision is upheld, Trump may appeal to the Supreme Court, where he will need to obtain a majority among the nine judges, six appointed by Republicans and three by Democrats. Most legal experts believe the Supreme Court will resolve the issue for the entire country.
