President Joe Biden’s administration gave its approval for the construction of a section of the border wall in south Texas, in an attempt to contain the increase in the number of migrants arriving in the country. According to the BBC, the new section will be 20 miles long and will be built in Starr County, along the border with Mexico.

During his campaign for president, Joe Biden promised that he would not expand “one more meter of wall” if he were elected. However, this Thursday, in statements to the press, he assured that he tried to redirect the funding for other purposes, but without success. “The money destined for the construction of the border wall was already allocated. I tried to redirect it to other purposes, but it was not viable. The legislation does not allow resources already designated to be used in other projects”, he declared, as quoted by CNN. When asked if he believed that the wall could stop immigration into the country, he responded in the negative.

According to the television channel, the construction will be funded by funds specifically earmarked for physical border barriers, with a defined deadline for their use. If this deadline was exceeded, the funds would no longer be available. The Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, criticized the measure and highlighted the inconsistency of the North American President. “The construction of the wall goes against what Biden had previously defended,” he said. He acknowledged, however, that there is “strong pressure from far-right political groups in the US.”
