The United States vetoed Brazil’s proposal for a resolution on the conflict between Israel and Hamas at a meeting at the United Nations (UN) Security Council held last Tuesday, the 17th.

The veto was justified by the change in the text of the proposal, which now includes a request for an immediate ceasefire, a change made by Russia. In the overall score, 12 countries voted in favor of the Brazilian proposal, while Russia and the United Kingdom abstained, and only the USA voted against, due to the need for a clause that recognized Israel’s right to defend itself.

The Brazilian proposal included the suggestion of “humanitarian pauses to allow rapid and safe humanitarian access”, immediate revocation of the evacuation order from areas north of the Gaza Strip, provision of electricity, water, food and medicine to the civilian population of Gaza , and the immediate and unconditional release of civilian hostages kidnapped by Hamas on October 7.
The Minister of International Relations, Mauro Vieira, commented on the veto of the Brazilian proposal, mentioning that the Brazilian team presented a text accepted by 12 of the 15 members of the Security Council, focused on the end of hostilities for the opening of a humanitarian corridor and the possibility of sending help. However, it was not possible to pass this resolution due to a division of opinions. The Brazilian government’s emphasis was on humanitarian concerns at this time.
