Last Tuesday (16), the campaign of the President of the United States, Joe Biden, highlighted that Donald Trump’s victory in the Republican Party conventions in Iowa represents a “threat to our democracy”, indicating that the former president is seeking to consolidate its power. Campaign communications director Michael Tyler told CNN that Biden will have the message needed to defeat Trump, addressing issues such as abortion, health care and the former president’s “dictatorial” comments.

When asked about a CNN poll that found 65% of Republican caucus attendees in Iowa would vote for Trump even if he were convicted of a crime, Tyler suggested this reflects both the low turnout at the caucuses and the consolidation of Trump’s base.

“Voter turnout was not as strong in Iowa, and what we witnessed was Donald Trump consolidating his MAGA [Make America Great Again, Trump campaign slogan] extremist base in the state,” Tyler said.

He emphasized that the competition is taking place with a dangerous and unpopular agenda, pointing to the 2022 midterm elections and the results of the 2023 “off-year” elections as evidence of Americans’ rejection of that agenda.
