El Ghazi was banned from training and matches on October 17, after a post on social media (now deleted) which was perceived to be pro-Palestinian. He reposted a note in his Instagram Story, talking about the war, which finalizes saying “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”.

After that, the club shared a statement justifying the player’s dismissal due to an “intolerable” comment on social media about the conflict in the Middle East. Reports were saying that the German club would terminate his contract, but now they shared a new statement, saying that they have “opened the door for him to resume his duties”.

“Given his commitment to upholding the club’s values and the remorse shown, and in keeping with the club’s culture of using mistakes as an opportunity to learn, Anwar El Ghazi will return to training and matchday-related activities with 1. FSV Mainz 05 soon”, said the statement.

El Ghazi’s publication caused controversy because one of the club founders, Eugen Salomon, was Jewish. He was stripped of club functions by the Nazis in 1933, and died in the Holocaust in 1942.

The forward signed for Mainz on a free transfer this summer, and played three games this season. It’s understood that he is back home in the Netherlands, and it’s not clear when or even if he will return.
