Interview by Claudia Ciuffo
At the Four Seasons Beverly Hills, JETSS met with the very happy and appreciative Jake Johnson, co-writer/producer and lead actor in ‘Digging For Fire.’ We spoke with Johnson about the eerie true story that led to the idea for the script. The film is directed and co-written by Joe Swanberg and also stars Orlando Bloom, Rosemarie Dewitt, Brie Larson, Sam Rockwell, Anna Kendrick and Mike Birbiglia.
The synopsis for ‘Digging For Fire’ is the discovery of a bone and a gun sends a husband and wife on separate adventures over the course of a weekend. The film will release August 21st.
JETSS: Since you co-wrote the script, did that help you as an actor in the film?
Jake Johnson: That’s a great question! Actually, this was tricky for me to just be an actor on. I found myself watching all the talented actors and being more reactionary. It was my job to drive the scene forward but again I found myself watching, so no it didn’t help and made it a little bit harder.
JETSS: Is it true that this film was based on your real life experience of you “digging” in the back yard?
JJ: Yes, a few years ago I with my wife in our backyard digging a garden when I came across a bone, a rusted gun, a bag of marbles, license plate and bunch of other stuff. Needless to say, I FREAKED OUT and called the Police and their response was “‘it’s not their job to dig out somebody trash.'” Nice huh?!
JETSS: How did you score Orlando Bloom?
JJ: We called and asked, lol. Wow, I still can’t believe we got Orlando; it’s not often you get an A-list star to agree to do an indie. We shot in the summer and a lot actors are not working so he just basically signed on. He was great, no, he was excellent and shined as Orlando Bloom does [laughs]. Joe [Swanberg] and I kept looking at each thinking how lucky and appreciative were to get this incredible cast. Really, all the actors were so kind, when we reached out they said, ‘cool, I’m in!’
