The Significant Death in Modern Family Was Unacceptably Disappointing To Say The Least

The significant death in Modern Family was just a waste of what could’ve been an entertaining Halloween episode.

Last month, Modern Family co-creator Christopher Lloyd told Entertainment Weekly that Season 10 of the comedy series would feature a dark moment—the death of a “significant character on the series.” The character’s passing, he said, “will be a moving event—and an event that has repercussions across several episodes.”

But when Lloyd said “significant” we never thought it’d be a person who has only been in exactly seven episodes in the last 10 years.

Wednesday night’s episode, the Halloween special of the Emmy-winning shows, dropped the bomb that DeDe Pritchett, played by Shelley Long, was dead. And yes, the audience was moved—but not in quite the way the show’s executives had in mind.

While DeDe was a “significant” character in the lives of their children, grandchildren, and even his ex-husband, she wasn’t so meaningful to us, fans. So needless to say, many were kind of riled and disappointed, to say the least, taking their frustration out on Twitter.
