Joel Grey is perhaps one of the world’s most famous triple threats, but the Cabaret star still managed to live many years with one aspect of his life close to the vest. The living legend who has two children from a 24-year marriage is… wait for it, GAY!
“I don’t like labels, but if you have to put a label on it, I’m a gay man,” Grey revealed to People. “I came to realize, along with being attracted to girls, I had similar feelings for boys. All the people close to me have known for years who I am. Yet it took time to embrace that other part of who I always was.”
It might sound surprising that a Broadway star struggled with this issue, but it’s important to remember that the 82-year-old grew up in a far different environment. Recalling his days as a boy in Cleveland, Ohio, the Oscar-winner remembers “hearing the grownups talk in the next room, my mother included, talking derisively about ‘fairies’ and men being dragged off to jail and even worse for being who they were.”
Grey went on to marry actress Jo Wilder and have two children, Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey and a son James.
