D.L. Hughley obviously is not in agreement with Caitlyn Jenner receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award from the ESPY’s.
The actor-comedian was asked about Jenner’s ESPYs honor on today, and he argued the former Olympian did not deserve to be equated with Arthur Ashe. Hughley told a photographer, “Ashe was a symbol of courage. He fought segregated South, a very segregated profession. He fought AIDs with dignity and honor. And Caitlyn Jenner put on a dress. I don’t think it’s the same thing.”
Hughley argued late college basketball player Lauren Hill, who died of cancer, was more worthy of receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. He added, “I think Arthur Ashe and Caitlyn Jenner have very little in common.” And when asked point-blank if Jenner is a beautiful woman, Hughley immediately said “no!”
“In like Mrs. Doubtfire kind of way, stop it,” he shot back. Hughley went on to tie in recent criticism of Serena Williams, in which detractors said she looks like a man, and said, “Bruce Jenner looks like every P.E. teacher I ever had. It’s a weirder thing.”
