Steve Harvey has been invited back to host Miss Universe next year despite his massive blunder crowning the wrong winner last weekend. In what will stand as one of the most monumental live TV gaffes, Harvey announced Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, as the winner of the beauty pageant, only to dethrone her two minutes later.
Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach from the Philippines was then announced as the actual winner, much to the dismay of the rowdy crowd and some of the other contestants. The explosion of online mentions and memes no doubt banked the pageant valuable pull for viewership next year, though and Steve Harvey has been invited back to redeem himself as host, the Mirror reports.
“He was funny, he was informative, he’s high energy, he’s got a great following,” pageant organizer Mark Shapiro said. “I definitely want him back, and I would hate to see him not come back. He’s going to want a shot to redeem himself.”
Celebrity judge and infamous entertainment blogger Perez Hilton supported the idea, saying: “They need to bring Steve Harvey back again next year.” No stranger to the power of controversy himself, Hilton added: “I was a little bummed he stole my thunder because I had a good Trump moment earlier in the telecast that nobody remembers now because of everything that happened.”
