To all the world, it seems Selena Gomez is leading a charmed and enviable life. The 24 year-old Walt Disney star has sold over 7 million albums and 22 million singles worldwide, released her own clothing and perfume line years ago, and was spotted by paparazzi on a hot date with Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye just two weeks ago.
But according to at least one family member, she may be headed for a free-fall.
Selena’s uncle, Texan Artemis Arzola, has told Radar Online that the award-winning actress and pop singer’s condition – the auto-immune disease lupus, for which Gomez first received chemotherapy in 2015 – came to a head six months ago and could threaten to take her life.
Arzola claims that Selena’s free-spirited lifestyle, which includes hanging out with the notorious drug and alcohol user Tesfaye, must slow down. “(She) needs to pray, and peace will come to her,” says the Grand Prairie resident who enjoyed a close relationship with Gomez during her adolescent years. “Nobody famous can help her, only God.”
Gomez has abused her health before. In 2014, she checked into a brief rehab for “exhaustion” as reports swirled about Xanax use and excessive partying with former beau Justin Bieber. The illness has also disrupted Selena’s music career, forcing the cancellation of tour dates and recording sessions.
Bieber has also criticized the vocalist’s recent lifestyle, accusing her of “using” The Weeknd for promotional purposes. However, Bieber and Tesfaye have had their problems lately, with Justin attempting to minimize the relevancy of his rival’s pop recordings in a brief Q & A with TMZ.
Selena’s loving uncle maintains that publicity-seeking and dating celebrities should be the least of her concerns. “Her illness wears her body out. She needs to take her health seriously…the lupus has hospitalized her twice” including one scare in August 2016, Arzola says.
